Top DVD HDD Recorder - 16 Aug 2007

I bought the little brother DVR-440HX last year and so far it has been excellent. The Standard Play (SP) picture quality is very good and there's not much point using the long play modes unless your'e trying to fit a whole series on the thing.
The Disc Navigator is quite advanced and the editing facilites are good as you can edit out adverts prior to writing to DVD-R. Recording programmes is simple and you can easily set it to record the whole series from one programme.
I have tried the Jukebox but it's limited in what it tells you, but OK for set going and leave it, e.g. for a party.
Minor niggle; doesn't come with digital audio out.
In summary I'm very happy with this and would recommend the DVR-440 or 540.
Super Pioneer - 12 Apr 2007

I bought my DVR-540HX-S last month, and so far it has performed perfectly. The picture quality in Standard Play (SP) mode is excellent - indistinguishable from my normal digital tv picture. I haven't tried the XP (Super Fine quality) setting, or any of the Long Play, Extended Play, or Super Long Play formats - no need, as the hard disk offers a massive 70 hours recording time. The Disc Navigator, which shows all available recordings on either HDD or DVD depending on mode selected, is simple to use, and the Electronic Programme Guide is first class, making programme selection easy.
I haven't tried the Juke Box feature yet, but having looked at the instructions in the (somewhat cumbersome and unintelligible) Operating Manual, it doesn't look worth the trouble. Only other minus point I've found - the trumpeted "Pause live TV" feature does not work with my television; it does say in the small print that not all TV's support this feature, so I suppose my set is one of the ones that doesn't. Not a problem.
Overall, I'm absolutely delighted with the DVR-540HX-S, and would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone.
Not very Pioneering - 22 Nov 2006

I have had one of these machines and returned it after a week to the supplier.
Here were its bad points:
*The picture quality. It was set to RGB (through SCART) and it looked a bit washed out, not very sharp. There was a green tinge to flesh tones overall it reminded me of VHS playback.
*After turning on it took a long time to be ready - this was blank screen time.
*If the timer was set to record something in the future you couldn't standby the machine!
*After recording the machine would go into Standby - pretty annoying if you were watching the programme you were recording as you had to turn the machine back on to continue watching what you wanted!
*The remote - the top half was very neat as it has all the important buttons and was easy to use. Under the slide down panel the additional buttons sat in a recess and were fiddly to press.
*No HDMI upscaling - but hey, I knew that when I bought it.
*Noisy HDD!
This machine will play anything that you sling at it (pretty much). The DVD playback was excellent and the sound was as good as I expected.
The main failings of this machine seem to be the Digital Freeview tuner - it just doesn't cut the mustard.
I had to return my machine as the hardisk broke (it kept wiping it self and making grinding noises) - but I'm sure that was a one off.
