This recorder updates itself at the most inconvenient times 0300, 0500 etc. I find this very annoying as there appears to be a turn off option, which doesn't work. Apart from this I have no problems.

brilliant, simply the best! - 27 Sep 2007

I bought this recorder on amazon 12 mths ago after much time spent sussing the different ones available. Quite simply it turned out to be the best money I've ever spent! it is absolutely superb,Even now all this time later I am over the moon with it! My only regret is that I didn't go for the next model up with the bigger hard drive but mine is fine.If your looking for a good recorder, honestly, this is it! Also of all the articles I have bought via amazon, I have only ever had a problem once, and amazon sorted it immediatly! They are good to deal with, and cheap. Finally, my recorder is now down to half of what I paid for it! So what further encouragement do you need!

BRILLIANT!!!...(erm, mostly) - 04 Sep 2007

I've had this for a while now and definitely don't regret buying it. Like all the best technology it doesn't get in the way of what you want to do - setting up a program from the epg is a doddle - no faffing around with discs; just press a few buttons, go out and come back to a perfectly watchable recording (I've only ever used Standard Play - I haven't even bothered to use the highest XP quality so I guess that tells you something).
However there are a few things that do bug me; once a timed recording has started the machine is locked and there seems to be no way to set another recording. Also of mild irritation is the remote - the two buttons that (for me at least) get the most use - the FF and Rewind buttons - are two of the smallest and tucked away under the slide-back cover, which makes things real fiddly when viewing in the dark. Also the FF speeds aren't quite right; when FF'ing through adverts X3 is too slow and X4 is too fast. It needs a X3.5!!!
Apart from these minor operational foibles I feel this is good bit of kit and I recommend it.

WELL IMPRESSED REVIEW - 26 May 2007

Having owned a Phillips DVD recorder for a few years, the need to update had arrived.
The Phillips was excellent but within 24 hours I have realised what more was on offer.
The Pioneer was very easy to install and so far the performance is superb.
I was tempted to buy Sony or Toshiba but read the Amazon customer reviews(Not good!!!!).
The Pioneer is better than I expected and for the price I paid(Albeit "as new"), I am very pleased.
This machine is half the price I paid for the Phillips and is twice as good and twice as versatile.
Brilliant product and the supplier(Mikrolive Ltd.)were equally as good.
Well impressed.

A slightly more sober review.... - 18 Apr 2007

Having been a big fan of DVD recorders for a few years now I have yet to find one that is flawless and this Pioneer model is no exception.

Although I agree in the main that it is a very handy piece of equipment and the first that has allowed me to record Freeview, it also has some quite irritating drawbacks...

1) When you record terrestrial TV using PDC it will only start recording when the machine is turned off. This means that if you want to watch another recording or DVD using the machine that will overlap with the start time, you have to either have to keep a note of the time and stop and turn off the machine while waiting for the broadcast to start or else not use PDC at all and then risk (not really risk, assume, since most broadcasts don't run to precise times) having the end cut off. Very frustrating. (if you don't turn off the machine and use PDC then it won't record at all, something that took me a little while to spot while I assumed it was some kind of temporary one-off blip each time it happened) (My previous Philips Hard Disc recorder recorded fine using PDC regardless of whether the machine was switched on or off when the broadcast started)

2) The quality of the recording when using SLP (super long play) is pretty unwatchable meaning the least you can record in is LP (long play). This might seem a minor point since you still get a lot of hours recording time on the machine and you can back up to DVD disc but it means you can only back up 4hrs to each disc as opposed to 6hrs in SLP (super long play) which was the norm and perfectly watchable on my previous Philips DVD hard disc recorder (itself not without flaws) and so discs quickly get filled and it is much harder to keep a series together on one disc without running out of space.

3) Although it mentions in another review on here that you can only back up to DVD disc when using +RW in "real time" (ie to copy a 1hr programme to a disc would take 1hr as opposed to a few minutes using standard fast copy) I had this problem originally but found it is only if you try and record in quality below LP (long play) (ie SLP (6hrs per disc) or ELP (8hrs per disc)) which again didn't happen with my Philips Hard Disc recorder which would back up quickly using any recording quality.

As I say, all this is just to provide a bit of balance to the reviews and wouldn't necessarily mean I would advise against buying this machine since I think it will probably suit and bring real advances to a lot of people.

I personally wouldn't buy another but at the same time couldn't say it was any worse than any other machine on the market (Panasonic, JVC, Sony etc) which probably all have similar kinds of faults and so intend to hold on to it for a while in the hope that a Dual Freeview Tuner version with the above flaws ironed out appears on the market.
