5 Reviews for Philips DVDR3480 - DVD Player & Recorder
so easy to set up - 09 Jul 2008

I got this dvd recorder for £55 from another source and its a great machine. It was so easy to set up........well it really set up itself.
I programed the multi-region code provided by other users on this site(many thanks for sharing this with all of us)I did what you said and I am now watching a dvd from america(region 1)titled "Lady sings the blues"featuring Diana Ross.
At this price you cannot afford to let this slip by..full marks for a great dvd recorder and so easy to set up(you will not need to get the grandchildren to set it up for you).

There is no point in detailing the various capabilities of The Philips DVDR3480 recorder as it is available in the manufacturers description above.
I also own its predecessor the DVDR 3380 and can confirm that the same excellent video quality is obtained from the newer machine.
The Menu system is much improved but unfortunately this excellent machine is once again let down by the remote control which often needs two or three taps on the button to work. (Yes I am pointing it straight at the IR receiver)
In addition the remote buttons are too small and close together for easy manipulation for normal size fingers.
Please get your act together Philips and hire someone who can design remotes.
That said I would still highly recommend this machine as excellent value for money as it is not expensive.

I don't normally type a review, but thought I would type one for this product as some of the reviews I feel are unfair.
This is possibly the cheapest named brand dvd recorder, so we aren't looking at a top of the range bargain, it's basic but it does exactly what it says on the box.
What I would say is how good you find this product depends on your needs, for me I have sky + so I don't need this product to do live recording I just want it to copy programmes from Sky +, so my requirements were quite basic. Also for me this DVD player is an upgrade for me, as my last dvd player was a £25.00 cheapy from Tescos. If you were looking to do live recording then although this machine would do the job I would suggest getting a DVD Ram capable dvd recorder.
I have bought this machine today, and the set up took 5 minutes, so nice and simple, I have tested all it's functions and I am pleased with the results so far. Picture quality is good, sound is clear and crisp and the machine is straight forward to use without the manual. The machine does have a whirring noise when playing a disc, but not noticeable when you start to watch something.
The remote control is possibly the weakest point of the DVD, but not in the way other reviews have found, the remote control responds quickly and there is no wait, now this could be down to me buying this a few months later than those reviews and philips have made some adjustments, or because my old DVD player was soo slow that this seem quicker. My only complaint (and this is very minor) is that the menu button isn't labeled 'menu' but disc instead, it took me a couple of minutes to suss that out.
Very easy to use and nicely priced - 23 Apr 2008

I've just got one of these replace my 10 year old VHS recorder, and I must say I'm very impressed with it. Recording off the TV is a doddle and playback is much better than VHS - even with some of the longer play modes. I can't give an exhaustive review, but if you want something to replace your old VHS recorder and just want to record off the TV and playback later, you can't go wrong for the price. The multi-region hack is a nice touch too, but I'll keep my old DVD player, as obviously you can't record anything off the TV if you choose to watch a DVD.
As for the negative comments, 1) Invest in some decent re-recordable discs - I use TDK DVD+RW 1-4x speed in nice library cases.
2) For editing and all that other complicated stuff - just use write once DVD+R or I suppose DVD-R, 'close' the disc and then upload to a computer via capture card, or perhaps screen capture software, and then you can do all the fancy editing you want before you burn to a new disc.
Like I said, it's just an ordinary DVD recorder, and at this price I think you get more than what you pay for.
Great value DivX Player and DVD Recorder - 06 Apr 2008

I just don't understand some of the negative reviews here. I've used it for a few months, and have found it to be stable and reliable (no matter how cheap the discs I've used are). The picture quality is great and I haven't had a problem with it yet. The remote control is average, not great but not bad either for a modern unit with all the functions it needs to make usable. Its as responsive as any remote control I've used. I haven't tried to extensively edit discs, I've merely added programmes onto discs and accepted the default menu structures. But anyone serious about editing DVDs would edit discs created with this unit on a PC. I can only think some reviewers have received faulty units or set it up wrong. Compared to other DVD recorders in this price bracket, its great, but then perhaps thats because my previous one was an awful Bush DVR3003.
