Panasonic DMR-EX768 - 08 Aug 2008

Good, as usual with Panasonic.
Its main advantage over other disc recorders is that the LP mode (allowing you to put about 4 hr 15 mins onto a DVD) has the same 500 lines of resolution as the SP mode which makes it very economical. I can't tell the difference on my (relatively small screened) TV between LP and SP and consequently usually use the former. Possibly there is a noticeable difference on larger screens.
A slight disappointment is that the inbuilt Freeview receiver doesn't seem quite as good as my old external Panasonic TU-CT41 box.
A step backwards is the abysmal "Guide Plus" EPG which replaces the old Freeview guide. It has space-wasting and distracting high contrast adverts on the left (mostly for BBC magazines) which change frequently making the whole thing so difficult, slow and unpleasant to use that I've reverted to using my external box for programme information.
Digital Freeview picture processing poor. Sony better. - 07 Aug 2008

Suprised after reading such happy reviews but I guess I'm more fussy.
Had it connected to a new Samsung 6 series 1080P 100Hz TV.
The 768 couldn't keep up with it's processing of the picture producing a too edgy & shadowy image. Also skin tones changed in areas on a still close up shot. Bottom of picture screen shows several lines badly smudged and an annoying blue line on half of last line of pixels (somehow linked to an on screen menu).
The machine is trying too hard to get the definition expected, which it cannot provide. Adjusted settings (with good advice on this machines settings and my TV) but no settings proved to solve the main problem of a poor freeview picture quality delivered by this machine.
The EPG with Guideplus is annoying as small and has advert involved.
Machine hardware design has no obvious record or DVD play buttons etc on the unit for the younger or persons with less experience with its remote.
Antiquated & over complicated DVD Door opening is reminiscent of the French !
Cannot comment on DVD playback or recording, as it had to go.
So If you want this machine for digital freeview I would advise against it.
Sony HDD DVD recorder Digital freeview picture processing quality is far smoother and in my opinion better.
Rant over !
PS
The Doctor should be struck off !

A real gem! - 24 Jul 2008

This is the second panasonic dvd recorder that I have bought and it is a real gem. You can forget live tv. You will record everything and watch what you want, when you want to. I still have the older one which is not digital so I can record two programmes at the same time but only one is digital.
A whole lot better! - 15 Jul 2008

What a relief after making the mistake of buying Thomson. The Panasonic is well made, well thought through and a delight to set up; as I have a Viera TV the linked facilities make it so much better. I have not received the HDMI cable I ordered just yet, but look forward to a quality improvement on still a good colour-balanced picture.
Amazon & CityLink surpassed themselves: ordered on Saturday, delivered to a fairly remote location in the North Scottish Highlands on Tuesday midday. Fantastic.
Just superb! - 03 Jul 2008

This is my very first DVD recorder, and not owning one before I did not know what to expect. I did my research in depth and found using specs and customer reviews that this was the one for me....
I do not regret the decision to buy this at all. A very competant machine indeed.
It was set up and recorded within about 10-15 minutes from me opening the box, so very easy in terms of set up. Very good recording quality, and I like the whole "sky plus" set up, picking the programme you want to record and within seconds it has been set to record.
If you are looking for a DVD recorder with hard drive, this is the machine for you!
