Not as good as you might think - 17 Feb 2008

First the specification of this item is worst than many or most of the same price. Visit the official philips site for the owner manual for details. I agree that we shouldn't choose a piece of equipment based on specification. But at least meeting a reasonable limit is a must. Even without considering the price of this Hi-Fi, it doesn't meet the reasonable limit at all in my humble opinion.
1. The system lowest frequency response range start from 100Hz, (and the 100Hz limit is not merely the amplifier, but the DVD player as well, which should mean even adding a good sub-woofer won't allow you to enjoy bass below 100Hz) 100Hz limit is a bit ridiculously poor at this price point, and further considering that it is a DVD player as well. It might be okay for some kind of music for lacking of bass below 100Hz, but watching movies(esp. action) lacking bass below 100Hz is simply not enjoyable. If you have any requirement of bass at all, this would not suit you.
2.The harmonic distortion(0.7%), Signal to noise ratio(>=60dB) and the highest frequency range(16kHz) also worst than most of the same price. Please expect sound distortion, signal noise and no frequency response above 16kHZs.
(try comparing the spec. to hi-fi of the same or much lower price, from e.g. Onkyo and Denon and other brands)
3. The remote control is completely flat, which means you will have to be in a well-lit environment to actually see it to use it, you can't feel the position of the button. If you watch DVD or listen to CD with light turned off, you won't be able to distinguish the button on the remote control to use it, which is a absolute pain for me.
Amazing build quality - great sound - plenty of bass - 15 Feb 2008

We have had this a week and from the moment it arrived we have been a little in awe of it. The delivery guy asked (as usual) "Do you want a hand, its quite heavy?" say YES, its massive. The speaker cabinets are highly polished rosewood, more like a piano finish than anything Ive seen on a speaker. The sides of the speakers are cambered, not flat and the tops of the speakers are toughened bevelled black glass. The amp and dvd unit have cast aluminium casings and the amp, in particular feels like a brick. It actually takes ten seconds to warm up and you have a cool count down to let you know how long you have to wait. Unlike another reviewer, I have no problem at all with the bass, in fact, when the speakers are poorly positioned with insufficient space behind and around them the bass was actually opressively loud (the manual says check that the speaker cable is wired correctly in case of bass problems). It integrates really nicely with the television and greatly improves the enjoyability of dvds. On the down side, I too have noticed crackles on mute, changing function and pause (but not adjusting volume). The CD/DVD tray feels more flimsy than I would like. HDMI - not tried. We give it 5. Even with the niggles, its rather awe inspiring. At 250 ukp, I havent heard anything that even comes close.
Not quite the audiophile's system... - 10 Nov 2007

I bought this system after doing a lot of research on the internet. Having found no other review for it, I bought it anyway, hoping for the best.
Out of the box, the build quality of the system, and the quality of the components is very impressive. The speakers are made of solid wood, with a crystal glass top, and are unexpectedly heavy. The remote control has a metal face with touch sensitive keys similar to the Motorola Razr phone, with a leather back. Even the speaker cables supplied are of a high quality, and not the basic cheap cables supplied with most systems. Other connection leads supplied include a SCART lead and a component video lead, although no HDMI cable is supplied.
When the 'on' button is pressed, the system takes about 30 seconds to warm up and the valves come to life. The valves themselves can be viewed through a window in the preamp unit, and glow a nice orange in colour.
The sound quality of the system is not as punchy as I had hoped, and lacks heavy bass. I'm hoping that this will be resolved by adding a bass bin. There's plenty of mid-range and treble, so vocals sound rich and life like.
On the down side, low crackes can be heard when adjusting the volume. Hopefully, this can be remedied by adjusting the speaker connections. When loading CDs, the system takes a few seconds to recognise a CD. This is because the system is primarily a DVD based system and not just a CD player. So far, I haven't tried HDMI upscaling on the DVD, but the player in basic mode seems very good indeed.
The reason I haven't given this system 5 stars is because it is not the audiophile's system for £350 you are lead to believe. It is however, a good home theatre system... However if you are after one of these, you can get one made by Philips, the MCD 708 for cheaper at £180 also on Amazon.
